Description: ABHD2 is a acylglycerol lipase enzyme that is highly expressed in sperm. Progesterone has been demonstrated to bind ABHD2 and activate the hydrolysis of the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2AG). Basal level of 2AG inhibit the CatSper calcium channel that is involved in sperm hyperactivation. Depletion of 2AG by ABHD2 leads to calcium influx via CatSper and triggers sperm hyperactivation. This mechanism is viewed as the missing link in nongenomic steroid signaling that regulates sperm activation.
